Which one fits you? (quick guide)
- Girl in 1st year of B.Tech, B.Pharm or diploma (AICTE-approved), family income up to ₹8 lakh: apply for AICTE Pragati.
- Student with a disability of 40% or more in an AICTE course: AICTE Saksham. Every eligible student gets it, there’s no merit cut.
- Lost a parent, or a parent is critically ill, in any year of an AICTE course: check AICTE Swanath.
- Just joined your first PG course, under 30: UGC National Scholarship for PG Studies.
- SC, OBC, EBC or DNT student at an IIT, NIT, IIM or another notified top institute: check the Top Class scholarships. Your institute will have the list.
- 2nd, 3rd or 4th year B.Tech without any of the above: most central scholarships here are only for fresh 1st-year students. Look at your state’s scholarship or fee reimbursement scheme instead.
Normal B.Tech 1st year? Here’s where to look
If you’re a 1st-year B.Tech student who isn’t a girl, doesn’t have a disability and doesn’t fit AICTE Swanath, the honest answer is that no central scholarship on NSP is open for you right now. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing:
- Your state’s scholarship or fee reimbursement scheme. For most engineering students this is the biggest one. Many states pay part or all of the college fee for students below an income limit, through the state’s own scholarship portal. Check your state’s official portal for its deadline.
- Top Class scholarships (SC, OBC, EBC, DNT students) only work at notified institutes. IITs, NITs and IIMs are usually on the list. Other colleges qualify only if they are NAAC A++ or A+, in the NIRF top 100, or an Institution of National Importance, and have been notified under the scheme. To check your college, ask its scholarship cell, or see whether it appears when you choose the scheme on NSP.
- Private and corporate scholarships. Several companies and foundations run scholarships for engineering students from low-income families. Apply only on the company’s or foundation’s official website, and never pay a fee to apply.
Documents you’ll need
Keep these ready before you start:
- Aadhaar number, and a bank account linked (seeded) with Aadhaar
- Income certificate issued by the state government (for income-based schemes)
- Caste certificate (for SC, ST, OBC schemes)
- Disability certificate or UDID (for disability schemes)
- Class 10 and 12 marksheets, and your current course admission details
- Fee receipt (where tuition fee is reimbursed)
- Your college’s AISHE code (your college office will have it)

How to apply on NSP
- Go to scholarships.gov.in.
- Do the One Time Registration (OTR) with your Aadhaar and mobile number. You get an OTR number that you’ll use every year.
- Log in and click Apply for Scholarship.
- Fill in your details: course, marks, income, category and bank details.
- Choose the scholarship you’re eligible for. The portal shows schemes based on your details.
- Upload documents and submit before 31 October 2026.
- Tell your college. Your institute must verify it by 15 November, then the district or state verifies it by 30 November.
- Track it with Application Status and Track Your Payment on the NSP homepage.
Why applications get rejected (and how to avoid it)
- College didn’t verify in time. This is the most common reason. Follow up with your college’s scholarship nodal officer after you submit.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded. Money is paid by DBT, so your account must be linked with Aadhaar. Use Check Aadhaar Seeding Status on the NSP homepage.
- Name mismatch between Aadhaar, bank account and marksheet. Fix it before applying.
- Wrong or expired income certificate. Use a valid certificate issued by your state.
- Applying for two scholarships at once. Most schemes let you take only one scholarship at a time.
Should you apply?
If you fit any scholarship in the table, yes. It’s free, and ₹50,000 a year for AICTE Pragati adds up to ₹2 lakh over a 4-year B.Tech.
Don’t wait for the last week. Every year the portal slows down near the deadline, and college verification gets rushed. Apply this week, then remind your college.
And be careful with agents and websites that ask for money to “get your scholarship approved”. NSP never charges a fee, and only the official portal can approve your application.
Preparing for government jobs too? The SSC CHSL 2026 last date is 7 October for 12th-pass candidates.
